Overview of Solar Energy System Components

Depending on the functional and operational requirements of your solar energy system, its components may include:

  • DC-AC power inverter, which converts the power generated by your solar electric system so that it can be used by your home appliances
  • Battery bank, which stores solar energy for use when the sun isn’t shining
  • System and battery controller, which displays the health of your solar power system
  • Auxiliary energy sources, such as connections for the utility grid
  • Specified electrical load (appliances)
  • Solar panels (also called solar or photovoltaic/PV modules), which collect the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity

Systems may also include an assortment of balance of system (BOS) hardware, including:

  • Wiring
  • Overcurrent protection
  • Surge protection
  • Disconnect devices
